Maples Group Announces 2024 Global Partner and Of Counsel Promotions

Maples and Calder, the Maples Group’s law firm, is pleased to announce the promotion of 18 of its lawyers to Partner and Of Counsel this year.  The new cohort represent the strength and depth of the international law firm’s British Virgin Islands (“BVI”), Cayman Islands, Irish, Jersey and Luxembourg legal offerings with lawyers from eight of its offices represented in the latest round of promotions.

The newly elected Partners and Of Counsel have been made across the firm’s core practice areas of Corporate, Dispute Resolution & Insolvency, Finance and Funds & Investment Management in its BVI, Cayman Islands, Dublin, Hong Kong, Jersey, London, Luxembourg and Singapore offices. Demonstrating the Group’s commitment to fostering a culture that values diverse perspectives, the newly promoted lawyers are from a diverse range of backgrounds and nationalities, with women representing 44% of the group.

MAPLES GROUP ANNOUNCES PARTNER AND OF COUNSEL PROMOTIONS IN BVI

Maples and Calder, the Maples Group’s law firm, is pleased to announce the promotion of Dispute Resolution & Insolvency lawyer, Stuart Rau, to Partner and Funds & Investment Management and Corporate lawyer, Amel Wehden, to Of Counsel in its British Virgin Islands (“BVI”) office.

With experience practising in the London, Hong Kong and BVI markets, Stuart has truly international perspective and extensive knowledge of contentious cross-border matters arising out of multiple jurisdictions. His area of practice also specialises in financial litigation and regulatory investigations. Stuart regularly represents clients before the BVI Courts on many high-profile disputes. A practical and experienced lawyer, Legal 500 has recommended Stuart as a ‘Rising Star’.

Amel advises investment funds, in particular the establishment and maintenance of hedge funds and private equity funds. In addition to her funds practice, Amel specialises in all areas of corporate law, including mergers and acquisitions, disposals, initial public offerings, corporate reorganisations and general corporate governance. A focused, disciplined, and knowledgeable funds lawyer, Legal 500 recommends Amel as a ‘Rising Star’.

Stuart and Amel will work closely with lawyers and professionals across the firm’s core BVI practice areas of Corporate, Dispute Resolution & Insolvency, Funds & Investment Management and Finance as well as the firm’s global practices. MAPLES GROUP STRENGTHENS CAYMAN ISLANDS LITIGATION AND FINANCE PRACTICES WITH PARTNER APPOINTMENTS

Maples and Calder, the Maples Group’s law firm, is pleased to announce the promotion of Malachi Sweetman and Matthew St-Amour to Partner in its Cayman Islands office.

Malachi is a member of the Dispute Resolution & Insolvency practice with many years of experience in commercial litigation and across a broad range of financial and commercial disputes. An experienced advocate, Malachi specialises in shareholder litigation including high-value merger appraisals and has also advised on cross-border insolvencies. His significant disputes include representing FGL Holdings in its successful merger appraisal action and the ongoing appraisal actions involving 58.com and 51JOB.

Matthew, a senior lawyer in the firm’s Finance practice, has extensive experience advising both borrower and lender side clients on all stages of the funding lifecycle. His clients include hedge funds, private equity funds, banks and non-bank lenders. He regularly advises on fund finance and other secured lending transactions, structured finance and bankruptcy remote structures, derivatives and all types of collateral and credit support arrangements.

The new Partner appointments highlight the firm’s continued growth trajectory and dedication to training and advancing the next generation of lawyers. MAPLES GROUP APPOINTS NEW FINANCE OF COUNSEL IN LONDON

Maples and Calder, the Maples Group’s law firm, is pleased to announce the promotion of Ana Lazgare, a Finance lawyer based in London, to Of Counsel.

Ana, a member of the firm’s London Finance practice, advises on both British Virgin Islands and Cayman Islands law on a wide range of finance transactions, and has particular expertise in structured finance and securitisations, project finance, capital markets, fund finance and venture capital transactions. Born in Mexico City and fluent in Spanish, Ana has also developed particularly strong experience in the Latin America market and has been involved in significant transactions including the large sustainability-linked bond in Latin America awarded the infrastructure financing of the year by Latin Finance1. Ana was recently recognised for her efforts in the fund finance industry as a ‘Rising Star’ by the Fund Finance Association2.

Maples and Calder, the Maples Group’s law firm, is pleased to announce the promotion of four of its lawyers to Of Counsel in its Hong Kong and Singapore offices. The four new Of Counsel have been appointed to the firm’s Asia Corporate, Finance, Funds & Investment Management and Dispute Resolution & Insolvency practices, demonstrating their broad range of skills and contributions to the firm.

The new Of Counsel are Jessica Zhan (Corporate), Cherrin Wong (Dispute Resolution & Insolvency), Irena Wu (Finance) and Dan Won (Funds & Investment Management).

  • Advising Sunac China Holdings Ltd. on the landmark US$10.2 billion offshore restructuring – awarded “Asia Pacific Restructuring Deal of the Year” by IFR Awards 2023 and “Turnaround Deal of the Year” by IFR Asia Awards 2023.
  • Advising AirTrunk on the AU$4.6 billion sustainability-linked, multi-currency debt financing, which represented the largest loan deal in the Australian market in 2023 and the largest sustainability-linked loan established for a data centre operator globally – shortlisted for ESG Deal of the Year by Asia Legal Awards 2023.
  • Advising Adlai Nortye Ltd the first Chinese company to successfully launch a US IPO by obtaining a China Securities Regulatory Commission filing, a new regulation adopted in March 2023, for overseas listings of Chinese enterprises – shortlisted for Equity Market Deal of the Year: South China & Central China by ALB China Regional Law Awards 2023.
  • Advising Japan Industrial Partners (“JIP”) on the structuring and fundraising of the JIP-led consortium vehicle for the take-private of Toshiba Corporation. The US$15 billion-plus take-private of Toshiba is the largest private equity take-private in Japan’s history.

In addition to these promotions, the firm recently expanded its office space in Singapore2 and added a further Funds & Investment Management Partner3 to the practice late last year, signaling expected future growth in the region.

MAPLES GROUP APPOINTS OF COUNSEL FINANCE DUO IN JERSEY

Maples and Calder, the Maples Group’s law firm, is pleased to announce the promotion of Dan Perkins and Laura Hendrick, Finance lawyers based in Jersey, to Of Counsel.

Dan and Laura offer comprehensive Jersey legal advice to Jersey-based and international institutional, corporate and family office clients on an array of finance and corporate matters and have both been practising in the jurisdiction for a number of years. Working closely with the international firm’s network of 16 offices worldwide, the Jersey law firm has market-leading practices in Corporate, Finance and Funds & Investment Management and continues to be selected to advise on ‘first-of-its-kind’ transactions.

In addition to these promotions, the firm also recently welcomed a new Corporate Associate, Ayomide Ogunsesan, as well as its first legal trainees1 and has steadily grown its presence in Jersey year-on-year. MAPLES GROUP ANNOUNCES SIX PARTNER AND OF COUNSEL PROMOTIONS IN IRELAND

International law firm Maples and Calder (Ireland) LLP, the Maples Group’s law firm, is pleased to announce the promotion of six of its senior lawyers in Ireland. Aoife McDonagh (Funds & Investment Management) and Joe O’Neill (Finance) join the firm’s growing Irish partnership while Alex Walsh, Eoin O’Leary (Finance), Jennifer Dobbyn, and Richard O’Donoghue (Funds & Investment Management) have been promoted to Of Counsel positions.

Over the past 18 years, the firm has grown rapidly in Ireland, earning a strong reputation as an innovative leader in the legal sector, providing top-tier expertise and advice with deep sectoral and industry knowledge. Maples and Calder (Luxembourg) SARL, the Maples Group’s law firm in Luxembourg, is pleased to announce the promotion of Paul Chiellini-Morge to Of Counsel in its Corporate practice.

Paul advises domestic and international financial institutions, public and private businesses on corporate restructurings and cross-border mergers and acquisitions.
