Maples Group Advises on Trio of Offshore Debt Restructurings

Maples and Calder, the Maples Group’s law firm, is pleased to announce that its Global Dispute Resolution & Insolvency and Finance teams advised on the completion of three significant offshore debt restructurings in December 2025.

These successful mandates demonstrate the depth and strength of the firm’s multi-jurisdictional and multi-disciplinary capabilities and its capacity to act on the most significant matters in the market.

Details on the recent debt restructuring mandates are outlined below:

  • Country Garden Holdings Company Limited (“Country Garden”)

The team advised Country Garden on the successful restructuring of approximately US$17.7billion of its offshore debt, one of the largest and most complex offshore restructurings by a Chinese issuer, in terms of both debt quantum and the number and diversity of creditors.

  • CIFI Holdings (Group) Co. Ltd (“CIFI”)

The team advised CIFI on the successful restructuring of approximately US$8.1billion of its offshore debt.

  • Sunac China Holdings Ltd (“Sunac”)

The team advised Sunac on the successful restructuring of approximately US$9.6 billion of its offshore debt. This follows the firm acting for Sunac on its US$10.2 billion offshore debt restructuring in 2023.1

A multi-jurisdictional team of lawyers based in the Maples Group’s Hong Kong, Cayman Islands and British Virgin Islands (“BVI”) offices acted as Cayman Islands and BVI counsel to these companies. Led by Hong Kong Partners, Nick Stern and Lorraine Pao, the team also included Cayman Islands Partners, Nick Herrod and Christian La Roda Thomas, BVI Partner, Matthew Freeman and Hong Kong Of Counsel, Jean Bao.

“This was a strong end to the year for our teams as these matters were three of the largest ongoing real estate restructuring in the market,” said Nick Stern. “We are grateful for the trust placed in us by clients and counterparties alike, and we look forward to continuing to support stakeholders across the restructuring spectrum in 2026.”
