Areas of Expertise

Matthew is Head of Maples and Calder’s Dispute Resolution & Insolvency team in the British Virgin Islands. He advises on a broad range of complex and high-value disputes, with particular expertise in civil fraud and asset tracing, enforcement of judgments and arbitral awards, lender enforcement, trust litigation, regulatory matters, corporate restructuring and insolvency. He has extensive experience handling contentious matters at all stages of the dispute resolution process, including interlocutory applications, trials, appeals, arbitration and mediation, and is regularly instructed on cross-border matters involving major PRC real estate groups, digital asset businesses and other complex international disputes.

As head of the BVI Dispute Resolution & Insolvency team, Matthew has played a key role in the growth and development of the practice. His experience includes matters relating to China Evergrande, Country Garden, Kaisa, Three Arrows Capital, Bybit and Auros, reflecting the breadth of his practice across traditional and emerging sectors.

Matthew relocated to the BVI in 2015 and worked at two leading international firms. Prior to that he practised in England and Wales for eight years at leading UK law firms.

Matthew is ranked by Chambers and Partners and recognised by Legal 500 as a “Next Generation Partner”. In addition to his client practice, Matthew has a key leadership role within the Maples Group, helping to drive the strategic direction and operational leadership of the firm’s BVI business and its wider service offering.
