Fearghal is Head of the Maples Group’s Irish London branch and is partner of Maples and Calder’s Funds & Investment Management team.
He has over 15 years’ experience in advising leading international financial clients in the structuring, establishment, regulation and marketing of all types of Irish domiciled investment funds, including UCITS, AIFs, non-regulated funds in the hedge fund and private asset fund space. Fearghal has particular expertise in advising private asset sponsors with illiquid strategies (including private credit, equity, venture and real assets) looking to establish investor-facing vehicles using ILPs and ICAVs, as well as on carried interest, co-invest, secondaries and continuation vehicles. Fearghal also recently led a project to establish the first Irish ELTIF sub-fund of an umbrella ICAV.
Fearghal’s expertise also extends to the establishment and operation of Irish regulated AIFMs, UCITS management companies, MiFID investment firms and unregulated 1907 Act limited partnership and SPV structures. His practice also covers the governance, financing, cross-border distribution, management and relocation / redomiciliation of such entities into and out of Ireland, as well as the impact of wider regulatory initiatives including AIFMD II (delegation, liquidity management tools and loan origination), ELTIF 2.0 and retailisation, the Cross Border Distribution regime (pre marketing and marketing), SFDR, digital asset exposures, the CBI’s outsourcing and operational resilience expectations, and ongoing CBI CP86 governance and substance requirements.
Fearghal joined the Maples Group in 2012 from one of the largest Irish investment fund consulting and management companies and has also previously worked in UBS Asset Management. He is an Irish and English law qualified Solicitor, a New York Attorney and a Chartered Tax Advisor (CTA).
Fearghal is an active industry participant. Fearghal is a frequent speaker at various industry conferences on matters such as ILP reform, ESG/ SFDR, European distribution and Retailisation.
