Jonathon is head of Maples and Calder’s Finance practice in the Maples Group’s Cayman Islands office. He is also co-head of the firm’s Asset Finance practice and has extensive experience of international capital markets and corporate finance transactions. He advises on all types of aircraft finance structures, with a particular focus on aircraft portfolio securitisations, large leasing platform establishments (including partnerships with fund sponsor investors), and on- and off-balance sheet commercial aircraft finance and leasing. In addition, Jonathon regularly acts on fund finance transactions (for both lenders and borrowers, including capital commitment subscription financing), as well as structured finance matters including CLOs and debt funds. Jonathon also advises on a wide range of general corporate and commercial deals, including restructurings, joint ventures and M&A transactions, and debt and equity listings on the Cayman Islands Stock Exchange.
Jonathon joined the Maples Group in 2008 and was elected as a partner in 2014. He previously worked for Slaughter and May in London. Jonathon has been listed as a market leader by IFLR1000 and ranked in Who’s Who Legal, Legal 500 as a ‘Leading Individual’ and Chambers Global. In 2021, Jonathon was recognised by Airline Economics as a mentor in the aviation industry. Clients describe him as a truly outstanding lawyer with “a deep understanding of local law.”
Jonathon is a member of the Law Society of England and Wales and the Cayman Islands Legal Practitioners Association (CILPA).
