Maples Group Strengthens Hong Kong Disputes Bench with Strategic Hire

Maples and Calder, the Maples Group’s law firm, is pleased to announce that Scott Tolliss has rejoined the firm as Of Counsel in its Dispute Resolution & Insolvency team in Hong Kong, further strengthening the firm’s litigation and insolvency capabilities across Asia.

Scott previously worked in the firm’s British Virgin Islands (“BVI”) office and brings extensive offshore experience, having spent almost nine years practising in both the BVI and Jersey. He advises on complex commercial disputes, particularly those arising from distressed situations, with his practice encompassing fraud and asset recovery, shareholder actions, cross-border insolvency and restructuring, and enforcement proceedings.

Admitted as a solicitor-advocate, Scott has appeared before courts at all levels in the Eastern Caribbean, including the Court of Appeal and the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. He is admitted to practise in the BVI and in England & Wales, and has been recognised by Legal 500 for his work in dispute resolution.

John Trehey, Global Head of Dispute Resolution & Insolvency, commented: “We are extremely pleased to welcome back Scott to the Maples Group. He is a superb lawyer and his many years of ‘on-the-ground’ experience in the BVI will be invaluable to our clients across Asia.”

Scott added: “I am delighted to rejoin the Maples Group and to be part of the Hong Kong team, with whom I have worked closely during my time in the BVI. The firm’s global platform and strong reputation in complex offshore disputes provide an excellent opportunity to support clients across the APAC region.”

This strategic hire underscores the Maples Group’s continued investment in its Asia disputes platform and its commitment to delivering market-leading litigation and insolvency expertise to its global client base.

The Maples Group’s Asia Dispute Resolution & Insolvency team has extensive experience advising on complex BVI and Cayman Islands restructurings, insolvencies and commercial disputes across the region. The team has acted on a number of significant mandates, including advising Country Garden Holdings Company Limited on the successful restructuring of approximately US$17.7 billion of its offshore debt, and representing 58.com and 51job, Inc. in two of the largest merger appraisal cases to date. These matters highlight the team’s ability to deliver pragmatic, commercially focused solutions in high-stakes and technically complex situations.
