Maples Group Awarded ‘Restructuring and Insolvency Matter of the Year’ at Asia Legal Awards 2025

Maples and Calder, the Maples Group’s law firm, is pleased to announce that our Dispute Resolution & Insolvency practice has been awarded the ‘Restructuring and Insolvency Matter of the Year’ at the Asia Legal Awards 2025.

A multi-jurisdictional team of lawyers based in the Group’s Hong Kong, Cayman Islands, and British Virgin Islands (“BVI”) offices acted as Cayman Islands and BVI counsel to the ad hoc group of noteholders in relation to the US$12.3 billion offshore debt restructuring of the Chinese developer Kaisa Group Holdings (“Kaisa”). This represents the largest successful offshore restructuring of a Chinese real estate company to date and was also named ‘Deal of the Year 2024’ by China Business Law Journal.

The team was led by Partners Nick Stern (Hong Kong), Nick Herrod (Cayman Islands), and Matthew Freeman (BVI), supported by Of Counsel Jean Bao. Kirkland & Ellis acted as the international counsel for the ad hoc group and Sidley Austin LLP acted as international counsel to Kaisa.

Commenting on the award, Nick Stern said: “We are thrilled to receive this award, which is a testament to the talent of our Global Dispute Resolution & Insolvency team and reinforces our position as a leader in the industry. The collaborative efforts of all parties involved were crucial in achieving this milestone. We congratulate everyone involved in the successful completion of this landmark deal.”.

Maples and Calder’s Global Dispute Resolution & Insolvency practice is market-leading and has acted as offshore counsel on several of the largest and most complex PRC real estate debt restructurings, including the US$30 billion restructuring of China Evergrande Group and US$10.2 billion debt restructuring of Sunac China Holdings Ltd1.
