Maples Group appoints Peter Stapleton as Head of Irish Law Firm

Maples and Calder LLP (Ireland), the Maples Group’s law firm in Ireland, is pleased to announce the appointment of Peter Stapleton, as the new Managing Partner of its Irish office and a member of the firm’s Global Management Committee. Peter succeeds Nicholas Butcher, who retires from the firm after almost 18 years of service, six of which he spent as Managing Partner of the law firm in Ireland.

Based in Dublin, Peter has successfully led the Irish Funds & Investment Management practice over the past six years, confirming the firm’s position as a leading and most innovative legal adviser to Irish-serviced funds, year on year. Peter is widely recognised as one of the best financial services lawyers in Europe.

On his newly appointed role, Peter said, “I am grateful for the confidence bestowed by my peers on this appointment to the role of Managing Partner of our Irish office and it is an absolute privilege to lead the team in Ireland.  During Nicholas’ leadership over the last six years, the Irish law firm has grown significantly in stature and we all wish him the very best in his retirement. I am certain that we can build on our collective success by continuing to provide world-class legal and financial services solutions to our clients so they can truly benefit from our extensive global resources and capabilities.”

Commenting on the appointment, retiring Managing Partner of Maples and Calder (Ireland) LLP, Nicholas Butcher said, “The announcement of my retirement comes with many mixed emotions, however, we have been preparing for this day for a number of years and I am fully confident that Peter will continue to enhance and strengthen the leadership team in Dublin. His extensive experience in leading the Irish Funds & Investment Management practice over the past six years, as well as his other senior and management positions across the global group, ensures that he is extremely well-positioned to take on this role as Managing Partner of our Irish office. I wish him, and all the team at the Maples Group every success for the future.”

The Maples Group recently held its biennial elections for senior management positions, the results of which can be found here. In Ireland, Stephen McLoughlin (Finance), Robin McDonnell (Dispute Resolution & Insolvency), Karen Killalea (Employment), Diarmuid Mawe (Commercial Property), Emma Conaty (GRS), Stephen Carty (Financial Services Regulatory), Claire Morrissey (Data, Commercial & Technology), Mary Dunne (Projects and Infrastructure) and Andrew Quinn (Tax) remain in their existing roles. Following Peter’s appointment to Managing Partner, Eimear O’Dwyer and Adam Donoghue were appointed as co-heads of the Irish Funds & Investment Management practice.

Following Edward Miller’s retirement, Colm Rafferty was appointed as head of the Irish Corporate practice (a role he previously shared with Edward).
