Luke Stockdale

Luke Stockdale is a partner in Maples and Calder’s Dispute Resolution & Insolvency team in the Maples Group’s London office. He has extensive experience in complex commercial litigation, arbitration and contentious restructuring and insolvency matters, with particular emphasis on cross-border and multi-jurisdictional cases.

Luke’s Cayman Islands and British Virgin Islands dispute resolution practice encompasses fraud and asset tracing, shareholder disputes, investment fund and private equity disputes, private wealth and trust disputes, as well as contentious restructuring and insolvency matters. He regularly advises boards, investors, high-net-worth individuals, financial institutions, asset managers and insolvency practitioners on these matters. He is an experienced advocate and has provided expert evidence on Cayman Islands law for foreign proceedings.

Based in London, Luke works closely with Maples Group’s Cayman Islands and BVI practices, advising international clients on cross-border dispute resolution, restructuring and insolvency matters. He has been recommended by Chambers Global and recognised as a Leading Individual by The Legal 500.

His significant matters include acting for a leading global fund manager in contested winding-up proceedings connected to a multi-jurisdictional regulatory dispute involving threatened claims in the hundreds of millions of dollars. He has represented an ultra-high-net-worth individual in pursuing complex multi-billion-dollar fraud and asset-tracing claims spanning the Cayman Islands, Hong Kong and the PRC and the appointment of receivers and liquidators over various entities.

Luke’s experience also includes acting on a long-running dispute concerning the enforcement of an ICC arbitral award arising from the sale of a Brazilian airline, including an appeal before the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. In addition, he has acted for a joint venture partner in pursuing derivative claims, obtaining recognition of a foreign judgment and the appointment of a receiver to conduct the sale of disputed assets. He has also advised a large international private equity firm on a high-value cross-border dispute with a foreign tax authority.

Luke joined the Maples Group in 2012 and was elected to partner in 2019. He previously practised with Linklaters in London, and Mallesons in Australia.
