Maples Group Appoints Claire Morrissey to Lead Data Commercial and Technology Practice

Maples and Calder LLP, the Maples Group’s law firm in Ireland, is pleased to announce the appointment of Claire Morrissey to its growing Irish office.

Claire joins the firm as a Partner and head of the Data, Commercial and Technology practice.  She was previously a Partner at another Irish law firm and before that, spent a number of years at a Magic Circle law firm in London.  A leading adviser on data, technology and commercial contracts with particular expertise in GDPR compliance and investigations, emerging technologies and complex sourcing projects, Claire also advises on the technology, IP and data aspects of joint ventures and mergers and acquisitions.

Claire is highly recommended in a number of top-tier independent legal directories with clients lauding her as “practical and responsive”1, “technically excellent”2  and “meticulous in her analysis”3.  Impressively, in 2018, she was the only Irish lawyer to be listed in the prestigious ’40 under 40′ Global Data Review.

Speaking about Claire’s appointment, Ireland Managing Partner, Nicholas Butcher said:  “Claire is an exceptionally talented and experienced lawyer and I am delighted to welcome her to the Maples Group.  Data, Commercial and Technology is strategically significant for both us and the wider Irish economy and Claire will lead and also elevate our existing services in this important area.  Claire’s arrival reflects the evolution of our Irish business which, over the past number of years, has grown to become a full service international law firm with specialised practice areas to further support clients doing business in and from Ireland.”

While Claire will work closely with the Corporate and Employment teams, her expertise will appeal to clients across the firm’s Funds & Investment Management, Finance, Tax, Property and Litigation practices.

Commenting on her appointment, Claire Morrissey said:  “I am delighted to join the Maples Group where I’ll be working alongside an excellent team of lawyers and professionals.  I look forward to leading this practice area while growing our client base and contributing to the success of the Data, Commercial and Technology practice.”

Claire’s data experience includes advising on GDPR compliance, data transfers, data protection complaints and investigations and data breach management across all sectors including, in particular, financial services and technology.  She has advised on a wide range of commercial contracts including IT contracts and major outsourcings in the financial services sector, intellectual property transfers and licensing, software development, distribution and R&D agreements.

The Maples Group has a global footprint of 18 offices worldwide and its European offices in Dublin, Jersey, London, Luxembourg and the Netherlands continue to grow year on year.  With over 700 of its 2000+ global team members based in the region, it is clear to see the Group’s commitment to expanding its European presence.  Claire’s appointment is part of a long-term international investment strategy and follows a number of recent strategic appointments across the Group’s European offices.
