Matthew is a partner in the Maples Group’s London office and chairs the Global Real Estate Finance Group. He advises on finance, banking and corporate law matters involving BVI and Cayman Islands companies and partnerships, including public and private mergers and acquisitions, IPOs, partnerships and joint ventures, debt and equity financings, and project, real estate and asset financings as well as fund finance. Matthew specialises in the listing of BVI and Cayman Islands companies on international stock exchanges, including the London Stock Exchange / AIM, NASDAQ, NYSE and Tel Aviv Stock Exchange. He has acted for the issuer on a number of special purpose acquisition companies (SPACs) IPOs in the US and UK, and SPAC business combinations. Matthew also advises on BVI insurance, compliance and regulatory law, and regularly contributes to industry journals, including PLC, International Corporate Rescue, Captive Review and FINalternatives.
Matthew joined the Maples Group in the British Virgin Islands in 2007 and was elected as a partner in 2013. Matthew previously worked for Lester Aldridge. He has been recommended by Legal 500 and Chambers UK, where he was described as “a formidable BVI adviser” and has a “very commercial mind and can-do attitude. “According to Legal 500, Matthew is “a great lawyer who delivers as he promises he will”. He “understands the nature of our business, is very responsive and provides us with commercial and pragmatic legal solutions”. He has also been described in Chambers Global as “so responsive and diligent. He knows his stuff”. Clients report that “he is very user-friendly and his advice is always helpful and constructive” and “he is quick to respond and is always available,” adding: “He works to find a solution and is practical in his approach”. Matthew has co-written BVI chapters of the International Comparative Legal Guide to Lending and Secured Finance, and the International Comparative Legal Guide to Mergers and Acquisitions and is an editor of, and co-contributor to, the BVI text book Financial Services Demystified.
