09 Oct 2020

Maples and Calder, the Maples Group's law firm, was honoured to have been recognised at the annual Asia Legal Awards and the long-running ALB China Law Awards last month, winning a combined six awards and sweeping the offshore category at both events.  This is the firm's third and seventh consecutive year winning "Offshore Law Firm of the Year" at the Asia Legal Awards and ALB China Law Awards respectively.

At the Asia Legal Awards, the firm was also awarded the "Securities Deal of the Year – Equity" in recognition of its role as Cayman Islands legal counsel in Alibaba's US$11.3 billion secondary listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKSE).

At the ALB China Law Awards, the firm was delighted to receive further recognition for its involvement with the Alibaba HKSE listing in the following categories:

  • China Deal of the Year
  • Equity Market Deal of the Year - Premium
  • Technology, Media and Telecommunications Deal of the Year

Notably, the Alibaba HKSE listing was the largest public offering in Asia Pacific in 2019, a transaction that was led by Corporate Partners Greg Knowles and Derrick Kan and assisted by Associate, Mindy Ho. The Group also provided share registrar support with Eastern Fong, Regional Head of the Group's Fund Services - Asia and Vice President Christy Poon and their teams assisting.

"We are honoured to receive these prestigious accolades which are a testament to the Maples Group's longstanding relationships and commitment in Asia over the past 25 years," commented Matt Roberts, Partner and head of the Corporate practice in Asia.  "We endeavour to support more milestone transactions in the region."

Throughout 2020, the firm collected a number of awards in Asia including "Best Offshore Law Firm" at the China Business Law Awards and various "Deal of the Year" awards from Asian-Mena Counsel and China Business Law Journal.  The firm was also acknowledged at the ITR Asia Tax Awards.
