Karen Watson from Maples Fund Services and Jon Fowler from Maples and Calder participated in Opalesque's Cayman Roundtable discussion on September 28, 2010. Cayman continues to be the leading hedge fund jurisdiction and expects to register 1,200 new open-ended funds in 2010.  This is the same figure as in 2009, bringing the total number of Cayman hedge funds back to the pre-crash level of 9,589.  The members of the Roundtable express a view that products and regulations emerging in Europe are proving complimentary to existing fund offerings, rather than substituting for Cayman Islands funds. The Roundtable also covers the following topics:
  • Historical review: How did Cayman manage to become a dominant offshore hedge fund jurisdiction?
  • How important are recent development of jurisprudence in Cayman?
  • What should hedge fund managers know about ASC 740 or FIN 48?
  • How can the industry prepare for FACTA?
